Low Back Pain While Lying Down

Most low back pain occurs when the spine is bearing weight. When you stand, walk, lift, or sit upright, the weight of the upper body places pressure on the lumbar spine. Healthy discs contain a significant amount of water. This water content allows them to absorb shock and maintain flexibility.

How Does Degenerative Disc Disease Develop?

As people age, discs gradually lose water content. Repetitive bending, lifting, twisting, injuries, genetics, smoking, and other factors can accelerate this process.

Over time, the disc may begin to weaken. Small tears can develop within the annulus fibrosus. These tears are commonly called annular fissures.

As degeneration progresses, the disc loses height and structural integrity. The weakened annulus becomes less capable of containing the nucleus. Disc bulges, protrusions, herniations, and other abnormalities may develop.

Many people assume that degenerative disc disease simply means an aging disc. In reality, the condition often becomes painful because of the annular fissures that develop within the disc wall.

What Is Discogenic Pain?

Pain that originates from a damaged spinal disc is called discogenic pain.

The annulus fibrosus contains nerve fibers that can generate pain signals. When annular fissures develop, these nerves may become irritated and inflamed. The damaged tissue can trigger chronic pain that is often felt directly in the low back.

One of the greatest challenges with discogenic pain is that discs have a very limited blood supply. Most tissues in the body heal because blood vessels deliver oxygen, nutrients, growth factors, and healing cells to an injury.
